Brief Bio:

Barbara Lewis, who has spoken at national conferences on marketing topics, uses her two decades of marketing knowledge, coupled with her experience as a family member in the ICU with her dying sister, to share recommendations for exceeding patients’ expectations. Barbara is one of the most renowned experts on Patient and Family Advisory Councils conducting in-depth research, surveys and interviews on how hospitals integrate the patient voice at their institutions.

Relevant Credentials:

Barbara founded Centurion Consulting Group, a marketing and communication firm, after receiving an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management, where she currently lectures. She began her career as a journalist writing for national publications from The Wall Street Journal to the Ladies Home Journal. She was an on-camera television reporter for an ABC affiliate.

While spending two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit with her sister, Barbara used her customer service expertise and focused on the hospital staff’s interaction with patients and family members. She created a document entitled, Joan’s Family Bill of Rights, which highlights areas of excellent care and offers suggestions for improving patient satisfaction, which can boost HCAHPS scores. Using her ICU experience as a springboard, Barbara speaks to hospital staffs about how they can exceed patient expectations while re-igniting their passion for compassionate care.

Since 2013, Barbara has been researching Patient and Family Advisory Councils (PFACs), interviewing and surveying hundreds of healthcare professionals about PFACs’ financial and safety impact on hospitals. She is a frequent speaker at international conferences on her PFAC research. Barbara authored a seminal document on PFACs entitled, Starting and Sustaining Patient & Family Advisory Councils: from Leadership Assessment to Success Metrics.

Barbara is Co-chair of the Beryl Institute’s Global Patient & Family Advisory Council. She is on the Kaiser Permanente Regional Member Advisory Council and the Patient Advisory Council. Barbara is the Managing Editor of DocCom, an on-line communication skills learning program, which was developed as a grant-funded project between Drexel University College of Medicine and The American Academy on Communication in Healthcare and which is used as the primary communication curriculum across many medical schools, resident programs and hospitals (39.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™).
