See the opportunities and challenges organizations face in addressing the patient experience.

Case Studies provide real stories of current efforts, including programs being initiated, practices being implemented, and outcomes being targeted and/or achieved. Case studies are presented as both an opportunity for learning from others as well as a spark for further ideas on how we work to improve the patient experience. Improving the Delivery of Patient Health Education

What was the challenge, opportunity or issue faced?

Ahuja Medical Center in Beachwood, Ohio wanted to change the consumer perception and expectations of healthcare providers. A relatively new hospital, Ahuja opened in March 2011 into a competitive landscape. The hospital knew that patient-centered education is a requirement to achieve sustained improved health. In 2011, the 144-bed community hospital had only 150 health videos viewed on a monthly basis. Not only is health education a regulatory requirement, but it is an essential component of care and necessary to improve the overall health of its patients.

What did you do to address it?

Ahuja Medical Center used its interactive patient engagement platform, Skylight CareNavigator™, to help automate the delivery of health education. After a patient was admitted, the unit manager charge nurse would assign health education videos to the patient based on the admitting diagnosis. Once the nurse assigns the health education video, the video is automatically added to the patient’s dashboard, which is conveniently displayed on the patient’s television. The nurse would also include information regarding the discharge process. Patients were being educated on how to prepare for discharge once they were admitted.

Additionally, to help support nursing efforts to ensure patients watched their health education, Ahuja Medical Center would send patients messages on the television to remind or prompt them to watch their assigned health education.

What were the outcomes?

In 2012, Ahuja Medical Center increased the number of health education video views by 184% from 2011. In 2013, it continued to increase the number of health education video views. In 2013, the number of health education video views increased 51% from 2012.
