Brief Bio:

Marcus Engel, MS, CPXP, CSP is a speaker, author and respected thought leader who inspires and educates healthcare professionals with narratives of unforgettable patient experiences. As a college freshman, Marcus was blinded and nearly killed after being struck by a drunk driver. Marcus’ keynote presentation, "The Other End of the Stethoscope” chronicles his lengthy recovery from massive trauma and shares tales of compassionate communication shown by his care team. His keynotes have been witnessed by hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals and his books are used in curriculum at many of the nation’s leading nursing and allied health programs. Marcus is the co-founder of the I'm Here Movement, a 501(c)3 non-for-profit, which is changing the culture of care with two simple words.

Marcus Engel has devoted his life to improving experiences of patients and honoring the healthcare professionals who save lives every single day. His book, “The Other End of the Stethoscope” (2006) was one of the first books specifically designed to teach bedside caregivers strategies for compassionate communication.

Marcus was in The Beryl Institute’s inaugural class of Certified Patient Experience Professionals, is a Certified Speaking Professional by the National Speakers Association (a designation only about 12% of pro speakers ever achieve), and is a member of many associations working to improve patient quality and care.

In 2012, Marcus received an M.S. in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University, in the city of New York. In addition to his keynote, Marcus uses his academic background to teach physicians and surgeons, nurses and allied health professionals to use writing and journaling as a reflective and therapeutic practice for reducing compassion fatigue and burnout.
