MAY 2012 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Annette Ridenour
President
Aesthetics, Inc.
San Diego, CA

Annette is Aesthetics’ CEO and Creative Visionary Officer, whose role is to understand the pulse and direction of health care and to guide her design firm to assist health care organizations by designing physical environments that create positive patient experiences, and support organizational cultural change and improvement initiatives.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENT IN YOUR ROLE?

During a significant hospital expansion and redevelopment project, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota (Children’s) sought to enhance and deepen its current scope of care by improving the healing journey while evolving practices and approaches. Children’s partnered with Aesthetics, Inc. (I was the lead designer) to lead the design and implementation of an evidence-based visual and performing arts program whose goal was to provide a warm, creative atmosphere that promotes healing, enhances the child and family experience, and engages the neighborhoods surrounding the campus. Children’s "Arts & Healing and Urban Renewal Project” comprises a regional arts program, includes more than 350 pieces of original art on the hospital’s campuses, and partnerships with seven local art organizations that developed participative and performing arts programs. To ensure the program was evidence-based, a research and evaluation component was built in from the start.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU ARE CURRENTLY FACING?
Organizations are still functioning in silos while designing the patient experience, and not including the physical environment up-front in the conversations. I believe discussions must include how the physical environment can influence the design and outcomes of optimal patient experiences.

WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON THE FUTURE OF PATIENT EXPERIENCE?
Patient-experience design will be an increasingly accepted feature in health care. I am heartened by how many Chief Experience Officers are currently in place. I envision more successful programs that are designed around creating custom patient experiences which are truly tailored to the unique needs of each patient.  And I believe technology will play an important role.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN WHEN NOT WORKING?
Create art, spend time with my husband, traveling, and grandchildren.

WHY DID YOU JOIN THE BERYL INSTITUTE?
Because there are like-minded visionaries who obviously care about and are passionate about disseminating the very real, healing benefits of patient-experience care.
