Kathy Leicester

Patient Family Partner Volunteer
Virginia Mason
Seattle, Washington
Kathy Leicester is a member of the Experience Based Design (EBD) initiative at Virginia Mason and volunteers her time as a Patient Family Partner (PFP). She is a Business Coach who works with people who want to achieve their dreams but don’t know how to get there. She helps them uncover their personal manifesto, learn the self-knowledge necessary to clarify their dream and earn success however they define it.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENT IN YOUR ROLE?

My most significant accomplishment has been the identification of key components necessary for connection with other people and the ability to communicate these components in an actionable way.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU ARE CURRENTLY FACING?

The biggest challenge is persuading people that there is reason for hope concerning their future.

WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON THE FUTURE OF PATIENT EXPERIENCE?

Vulnerability, empathy, authenticity and sacrificial leadership are the components of transformed healthcare. If it doesn’t scare us a little we’re probably too close to shore. Private enterprise not government will create the future of healthcare, if it is to be a workable future.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN WHEN NOT WORKING?

I love to ski, drink coffee, take photographs of the beautiful Northwest, sing, write, run, hike and read English murder mysteries. I am also learning to golf.

WHY DID YOU JOIN THE BERYL INSTITUTE?

My passion as a Patient-Family-Partner feeds a thirst for more knowledge, more connection, more ways to make an impact. The Beryl Institute provides the knowledge, connections, and platform to further this important work. And because Virginia Mason brought me into their membership, I’ve received a huge gift!
